<image:title>Stories - Botswana’s challenge of river sand mining: Guest post by Otshabile Bahetoleng - The Rakabeswa River in the Mahalapye region of Botswana, pictured during the rainy season.</image:title>
<image:caption>The dry branches are fences around drinking wells in the sand. The Batswana are pastoral farmers, and most depend on sand aquifers and other groundwater to water their livestock because the country has a semi-arid climate with a short unreliable rainfall season. Sand Mining reduces the water holding capacity of the river, which is detrimental to the local agricultural sector.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - My name is Kiran Pereira and I’m the Founder & Chief Storyteller at SandStories.org. I currently work as a PhD Candidate at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. My research efforts are focussed on ‘Sand in the Anthropocene’.</image:title>
<image:caption>I started this website several years ago because I cared deeply and passionately about this topic. I was born and raised in India where I witnessed the impacts of indiscriminate sand extraction and it relates to some of my earliest memories. You may see just my face here but this work is made possible by several people including the occasional volunteer. Many members of our community supported my book crowdfunding appeal for which I am ever grateful! I’ve been receiving great feedback about the book in personal messages and some lovely reviews like the screenshot shared below. Proceeds from the book enable this website to remain ad-free. If you’d like to stay abreast of the latest news on sand and solutions, sign up to the monthly newsletter.</image:caption>
